How to stay safe sending money by mail:

.

There are several ways that you can send money by mail. You can use a money gram, or travelers check, or Money Order (Post Office), or Cashier's Check (Bank), or Personal Check (Regular Check), and so on.

.

Please note: Do not send "cash" through the mail. Sending cash through the mail is prohibited by all countries. And can be punished according to the law. Never send money in the mail as "cash" because you are running a very serious risk if you do. (2)(3)

.

"If you wish to send money in the mail, you need to convert your money into something else first." (3)

.

One of the biggest reasons for using a check rather than cash is because a check has a name written on it, which makes it harder for thief to make money from it. Cash may be used right away, but a check needs to be molested in some way before a thief is able to profit from it. (3)

.

Here are some of the ways you can convert your money:

.

#1).  Money Order (Post Office).
#2).  Cashier's Check (Bank).
#3).  Paper Check (Personal Check).
#4).  Electronic Transfer.
#5).  Travelers Check.

.

#1).  Money Order:

.

"A Money Order is a slip of paper (similar to a Paper Check) that you get from your post office." (2)

.

You'll pay the Post Office the full amount of money. And the Post Office then prints that amount of money on the Money Order. And then you'll take that Money Order and mail it to the recipient. (2)

.

#2).  Cashier's Check:

.

"A Cashier's Check is a slip of paper (similar to a Money Order) that you get from your bank." (2)

.

And pay the bank the full amount of money. And the bank then prints that amount on the Cashier's Check. Money Orders are usually purchased from a Post Office. Cashier's Checks are usually purchased from a bank. (2)

.

Not to be confused with a regular Paper Check.

.

Paper Checks are usually referred to as "Personal" checks. Because you fill them out, and the amount of money that you write on the Check isn't guaranteed by the bank. That's how you know the difference between a Cashier's Check and a normal Check.

.

A Cashier's Check is a Check that's filled out by your bank and the amount of money written on the Check is guaranteed by your bank. So that it can't default, which is a greater degree of assurance to the recipient when going to the bank to cash the check that it'll be paid in full to the recipient by the bank. And that there most likely won't be any problems. Usually Cashier Checks have built in security and are less susceptible to fraud than Personal Checks. (2)

.

#3).  Paper Check (Personal Check):

.

Sending money in the form of a Paper Check through the mail is an inexpensive process for the sender and recipient. And a Paper Check certainly gets the job done. Even in today’s high-tech world. (1)

.

#4).  Electronic Transfer:

.

I would suggest converting your money into some form of digital currency, such as putting it into your bank account and sending an electronic transfer. For example through PayPal who can take the money from your bank account and send it to the recipient's bank account. Or send a bank transfer (also called Wire Transfer or Wired).

.

#5).  Traveler's Check:

.

Basically the same as a Cashier's Check. And is issued by banks.

.

.

How to Send Money Safely...

.

Here are the ways to send money safely:

.

#1).  Double check the address.
#2).  Never write: "payable to cash" on it.
#3).  Track the delivery.
#4).  Deliver to a safe place.
#5).  Make it hard to recognize as money.
#6).  Restrict the payment.
#7).  Consider alternative forms of payment.
#8).  Use a Money Order.
#9).  Use a Cashier's Check.

.

Paper Check, Money Order, Cashier's Check, these are all forms of paper. And it needs to travel to the recipient. So, how safe is it to mail money to the recipient, and what can you do to keep your money from ending up in the wrong hands?

.

There are a few ways to increase the security of your payments:

.

#1).  Double check the address. (2)

.

It might seem silly, but it’s easy to stick a check into the wrong envelope or send it to the wrong place. Take five seconds to save yourself several weeks of stress, and make sure your check is headed to the right destination. (1)

.

Make sure your check or money order includes the following information:

.

- Your name and address.

- Daytime phone number.

.

#2).  Never write: "payable to cash" on your Paper Check.

.

"Sending a check that that says "payable in cash" is the same as sending cash, and it is a big mistake." (3)

.

You would probably never write that on your Paper Check anyways. Usually only people write that on a Paper Check when they are trying to give to charity, or friend, or to a politician, etc.

.

Always name the recipient!

.

Name a payee: Make sure to write a specific name (of a person or business) on the line that says “Pay to the order of.” This makes it harder for anybody else to get the money. (1)

.

#3).  Track the delivery so you know if and when it arrives.

.

You can always use certified mail or similar tracking services. These services are usually available at most mail delivery services. And they might cost a little more, but it's worth having the peace of mind. (1)

.

"In addition, if you track the parcel, then you get a sense of how long it should take the recipient to cash the money item." (3)

.

#4).  Deliver to a safe place.

.

Don’t just leave the letter with outgoing mail on your front porch or building entryway. The best approach is to drop the letter off at the post office or hand it to a uniformed mail carrier. (1)

.

Collection boxes might be slightly less safe, but you can minimize problems by dropping your letter off before the last daily collection (read the label near the mailbox door for pickup times). As long as the check doesn’t sit out overnight or over the weekend, it’ll almost certainly make it onto a mail truck. (1)

.

#5).  Make it hard to recognize as money.

.

Hide the check: If you like, you can try to make your letter look like a plain-old boring letter instead of something containing a large check. To disguise your check, fold a thick piece of paper around the check. (1)

.

"If you handle the mail for long enough, you will eventually learn to recognize which envelopes have money in them and which do not." (3)

.

You can do as you will to hide the money, but some people are experts at recognizing it. Some people can also tell if you have nestled a check in betwixt the sheets within the envelope. Nevertheless, it is harder to recognize a check than it is to recognize money. (3)

.

#6).  Restrict the payment.

.

Restrict the check: If you want to require that the check is deposited to a bank account, write “For deposit only to account of payee” in the endorsement area on the back of the check. This method is not 100 percent foolproof, but it improves your chances. (1)

.

#7). Consider alternative forms of payment.

.

Consider alternative forms of payment such as a wire transfer or other electronic payment. To see all of our other payment options please click here: (click here).

.

All Payment Options: (click here).

.

#8).  Use a Money Order.

.

Use a Money Order to prevent anybody from seeing your bank account and routing numbers. A personal check and any other forms of payment that reveal your banking information might be risky. You can send a Money Order instead. (1)

.

"Maybe you don’t want to send a personal check overseas because you don’t want your account details floating around the world. If that is the case, then an international money order may be the right option for you." (3)

.

#9).  Use a Cashier's Check. to prevent forgeries.

.

Use a Cashier's Check. to prevent forgeries. Cashier's Checks are issued by your bank and have built in security features that makes it more difficult for thieves to alter the check.

.

.

Conclusion:

.

So, what happens if you mail a check and it gets stolen?

.

For starters, the thief will have to forge the payee’s signature or alter the check (with modern checks, it’s difficult to get away with alterations). Among other things, that means he’ll commit fraud. Then, he’ll have to convince a bank or check cashing store to accept the fake endorsement (which is especially difficult without showing ID and revealing his identity). If you use the suggestions above, you’ll make it especially difficult for the thief. Also, there’s a better chance that you’ll have a bank account number tied to the thief, which will help investigators.

.

Assuming a thief is successful in getting cash, your check will have been used fraudulently. You should then contact your bank and law enforcement officials. State laws generally protect you from loss, but it’s important to follow the specific steps required in each state. The bank or check cashing store that cashed the check should be liable for any loss. (2)

.

Thieves tend to sell stolen checks to the same people. They sell to the same people to the point where patterns become so obvious that the police can track the thefts and the money from start to finish. And they usually divulge names of other thieves, the perpetrator is given leniency if he or she gives up the names of the people he or she has been selling the checks to. (3)

.

Lost a check?

.

If a check disappears, you can request a stop payment at your bank. Your bank will flag the check and (hopefully) prevent the check from being paid from your account. There is a modest fee for this service, and there are limits to how effective it is – but it’s an added layer of security. (2)

.

If your recipient doesn’t receive your cashier’s check, and maybe it is lost or stolen, and if it is not cashed within 90 days, then you may go to your bank and ask them to re-issue the check. They may charge you a small fee, but you will be able to regain access to your check. If you have noticed that your cashier’s check is missing, or that it has not arrived with the recipient, then get in touch with the bank right away and make a “Declaration Of Loss.” If all goes well, then the thief will be unable to cash your cashier’s check, and you will be able to have your bank re-issue the check around 90 days after it was first issued. (3)

.

You can also set up alerts (such as automated email or text alerts) from your bank so that you know when the check is deposited. Moving quickly will help you and your bank track down any problems.

.

Lost a Money Order?

.

If you lose your money order or it is stolen, then you may be able to get a refund. You may have to pay for a research request, and if it shows that the money order has not been cashed, then you may be able to get your money back. (3)

.

Alternatives to Mailing a Check...

.

If your payment is really important (or really large), see if there’s another way to pay. A wire transfer will get funds to a specific account quickly. If that’s overkill, there are numerous ways to send money online for a modest fee (or for free), including PayPal, Bitcoin, Western Union, and others.

.

Insurance...

.

If you are sending a lot of money, then find out if you are able to insure your parcel. Are you able to insure the money you are sending.

.

It will possibly take up to 10 days for your mail to be delivered. Then after that it can take up to 10 days for processing. After which time we'll attempt to send a receipt to you.
